The first homosexual actress?
Between 1994 and 1998 Ellen starred in a television sitcom* called "Ellen", which aired on ABC in the United States. The series was a huge success and propelled Ellen to the forefront of the stage, with the sitcom being nominated several times for Emmy Awards* and the Golden Globes*
Ellen would later come out on an edition of the Oprah Winfrey Show*, and from that came the lesbian coming out of her character in the show. The sitcom Ellen also brings the term Chapstick Lesbian*into the spotlight for the first time (which is an English term for a lesbian group with fairly neutral gender attributes)
It was the first time in the world that an artist came out publicly. And of course there were repercussions. Many people called for an outright boycott of the series and its removal from television, tens of thousands of letters were written and sent to Disney threatening them. The recording of the episode was the target of a bomb threat, which caused the people currently on the set (mostly actors and technicians) to leave the premises for several long hours.
